Ethical Principles and Publication Policy

AJESS JOURNAL is committed to adhering to ethical publishing principles and academic integrity. Our journal is based on the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines and mandates compliance with the ethical rules stated below.

1. Responsibilities of Authors

Originality and Plagiarism: Authors must submit only original research and cite all sources appropriately. Plagiarism, data fabrication, and academic dishonesty are strictly unacceptable.

Conflict of Interest: Authors must clearly state whether there is any financial or personal conflict of interest in their work.

Multiple or Concurrent Publication: The same work cannot be submitted concurrently for consideration in another journal.

Authorship Principles: Only those who made a scientific contribution to the study should be listed as authors. Honorary authorship or ghost authorship is an ethical violation.

2. Responsibilities of Reviewers

Double-Blind Peer Review: A double-blind peer review system is applied in AJESS JOURNAL; reviewers and authors do not know each other's identities.

Objectivity and Confidentiality: Reviewers must evaluate articles objectively and must not share any information about the process with third parties.

Conflict of Interest: Reviewers are required to decline evaluating articles with which they have a conflict of interest.

3. Responsibilities of Editors

Independence and Impartiality: Editors make decisions based on scientific validity; they do not discriminate based on the author's identity or institutional affiliations.

Stance Against Ethical Violations: Editors rigorously examine ethical violation complaints in accordance with COPE flowcharts.

4. Publication Ethics Violations and Process

When an ethical violation (plagiarism, data fabrication, etc.) is detected, the following process operates:

  • Preliminary Evaluation: The allegation is examined by the editorial board.
  • Defense: A formal explanation is requested from the author complained about.
  • Sanction: If the article has not been published, the process is stopped; if it has been published, a "Retraction" decision is taken and this situation is announced on the journal website. If necessary, the author's institution is informed.
  • Objection: Authors have the right to object to decisions; objections are examined by an independent committee.

Plagiarism Policy

AJESS JOURNAL aims to prevent plagiarism in academic studies by supporting scientific honesty and ethical publishing. In this direction, plagiarism detection and evaluation processes are carried out according to the principles stated below.

Definition and Types of Plagiarism

Plagiarism is defined as using another researcher's ideas, findings, text, or images without appropriate citation. The following types of plagiarism are considered in AJESS JOURNAL:

  • Direct Plagiarism: Copying directly from a source without citation.
  • Self-Plagiarism: The author repeating their previous work to a large extent and presenting it as a new study.
  • Patchwriting: Using phrases from other sources with minor changes without citing the original source.
  • Improper Citation: Incomplete or incorrect citation of used sources.
  • Data Fabrication & Falsification: Fabricating or altering data.

Plagiarism Rate and Acceptability Criteria

AJESS JOURNAL checks all articles with similarity detection software (e.g., Turnitin, iThenticate) and determines plagiarism rates.

  • The general plagiarism rate should not exceed 20%.
  • The one-to-one citation rate should not exceed 5%.
  • The bibliography section is not included in the similarity rate.
  • Direct quotes must be made within quotation marks and with correct citation.

Plagiarism Detection Process and Sanctions

Plagiarism detection is performed during the article submission stage and the peer review process. Depending on the detected plagiarism status, the following steps are applied:

1. Pre-Publication Plagiarism Detection

  • 20% and below similarity rate: The study is taken into the evaluation process in accordance with ethical rules.
  • 20-30% similarity rate: The author(s) are asked to revise the text.
  • 30% and above similarity rate: The study is rejected directly, and the author(s) are informed.

2. Post-Publication Plagiarism Detection

  • If plagiarism is detected in a published article, the article is retracted from the journal.
  • An ethical violation report may be submitted to the institutions the author is affiliated with.
  • The author(s) may be restricted from submitting new articles to AJESS JOURNAL for a certain period or permanently banned.

AJESS JOURNAL does not compromise on scientific ethical violations and expects authors to carry out their work within the framework of academic honesty.

AI Usage Policy

AJESS JOURNAL encourages the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in academic research. This policy has been prepared in line with international ethical guidelines such as the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), UNESCO Recommendations on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (2021), and the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity (ALLEA, 2023).

1. Transparency and Declaration Requirement

If authors have used AI-based tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Grammarly, Elicit, Scite, etc.) in their research or writing process, they must clearly state this in an appropriate section of the article (e.g., "Methods" or "Acknowledgments"). The AI tool used and its purpose (e.g., language editing, data analysis, suggestion generation, etc.) must be detailed.

2. Originality and Academic Integrity

Authors are responsible for ensuring the scientific accuracy of content produced by AI. Texts generated by AI should not be directly copied; they must be supported by academic sources and checked for scientific validity. It is unacceptable for the entire or a large part of the article content to be created by AI, and this is considered an ethical violation.

3. Citation and Source Usage

Since AI tools are not considered scientific sources, they cannot be cited directly. The validity of content produced by AI tools must be verified with academic sources that have passed peer review. Fake references or misleading citations are considered ethical violations.

4. AI Usage in Reviewer and Editor Process

Reviewers and editors can only use AI tools as auxiliary tools in scientific evaluation processes. Completely AI-supported evaluations are unacceptable in decision-making processes. If reviewers have used AI during the evaluation process, they are obliged to report this to the editors.

5. Data Security and Privacy

In accordance with ethical rules, confidential information (authors' identities, article drafts, reviewer reports, etc.) must not be uploaded to AI tools. Actions must be taken in compliance with GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and relevant international data privacy rules.

6. Ethical Violations and Sanctions

AJESS JOURNAL applies the following steps in ethical violations regarding AI usage:

  • Suspicious Content Review: The editorial board has the right to examine fraudulent content supported by AI.
  • Author Notification and Defense Request: If an ethical violation is detected, an explanation is requested from the authors regarding the issue.
  • Action Compatible with Plagiarism Policy: If AI-supported content manipulation is detected, action is taken within the scope of AJESS JOURNAL's plagiarism policy.
  • International Cooperation: When necessary, ethical violation reports are notified to relevant academic institutions and international publishing ethics committees.

AJESS JOURNAL supports the ethical use of AI in scientific research and encourages the conscious and responsible use of AI tools to protect academic honesty.

  • Evaluation Results: Reviewers make recommendations for the article to be accepted, revised, or rejected. Authors make necessary corrections in line with the reviewers' feedback. These corrections are reviewed again by the editor and reviewers.

Post-Evaluation and Decision Process

Following the reviewers' evaluations, editors make a final decision about the article.

Accept: If reviewers and editors are satisfied with the quality of the article, the article is accepted, and the process for publication is started.

Revision Required: If the article is found acceptable with some corrections, the author is given a certain time to make the necessary corrections. Authors revise according to the reviewers' suggestions and resubmit the article. Corrections are re-examined and approved by reviewers.

Reject: If the article does not meet scientific and methodological standards even after significant revisions, it is rejected. The author receives detailed feedback about the rejected article.
