This study examines Imam ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Thaʿālibī’s methodology in presenting the stories of the Prophets through his tafsīr al-Jawāhir al-Ḥisān. It aims to identify his sources and highlight the main features of his approach to presenting Qur’anic narratives. The study shows that al-Thaʿālibī considered the Holy Qur’an the primary source for interpreting these stories, while also drawing on authentic ḥadīths, reports from the Companions and Successors, and the statements of leading Qur’anic exegetes. He dealt cautiously with Isrāʾīliyyāt, accepting reports that were consistent with Islamic sources and rejecting those that contradicted them or compromised the status of the Prophets. The study also highlights al-Thaʿālibī’s concern with affirming the Prophets’ integrity and deriving educational and spiritual lessons from the narratives, as well as his use of linguistic analysis and poetic evidence to clarify meanings. His style is characterized by conciseness and clarity, reliance on established reports, and cross-reference when narratives are repeated. The study concludes that al-Thaʿālibī’s methodology combines the authenticity of transmitted sources, scholarly verification, and an educational dimension, making his tafsīr one of the notable works in the presentation of the stories of the Prophets.
