Algeria endured long periods of colonialism before entering an era of tribulation and darkness; consequently, Algerian narrative discourse became shrouded in the imagery of death—a factor that fostered psychological and physical alienation among the citizenry. These conditions and influences left their mark on both Algerian female writers and their protagonists. It was an unhealthy, abnormal environment that gave rise to identities that were likewise unsettled and insecure. How, then, did Algerian female novelists portray this milieu? This study addresses that question through a descriptive-analytical approach to the phenomenon.
