Interaction and mutual influence among languages is an ancient phenomenon. Like other languages, Arabic has been affected by this phenomenon, which is referred to in Arabic as al-muʿarrab. This denotes a foreign lexical item that has been introduced into Arabic and subjected to changes and modifications in its structure so that it conforms to the Arabic morphological pattern. It is noteworthy that the use of this process in the Arabic language dates back to the pre-Islamic period, and that it contributed to the growth, enrichment, and development of Arabic in its meanings, ideas, and vocabulary, as well as across all scientific, technical, and modern technological fields.
